Voting in the annual MAA governance election is now open. The election will be conducted in accordance with our By-Laws. The Nominating Committee is charged with nominating eight candidates for the four positions on the Council, balancing racial, gender, geographic, professional, and specialization diversity while also considering the same facets of the incumbents. The current President is charged with proposing four candidates for two openings on the Nominating Committee. As is our practice, the nominees for President and 1st Vice-President run unopposed; the position of 2nd Vice-President is contested among a slate of three candidates.

In addition to biographical information, each candidate has submitted a statement detailing their vision for the Academy and their reasons for wanting to participate in its governance. MAA News – Call for Nominations: CARA Awards

Robert L. Kindrick–CARA Award for Outstanding Service to Medieval Studies

The Medieval Academy of America’s Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA) invites nominations for its annual service prize. The Robert L. Kindrick–CARA Award for Outstanding Service to Medieval Studies recognizes Academy members who have provided leadership in developing, organizing, promoting, and sponsoring medieval studies through their administrative work—work that is critical to the health of medieval studies, but that often goes unrecognized by the profession at large. This award of $1000 is presented at the Annual Meeting of the Medieval Academy.

The annual deadline for nominations is 15 November; please note that three nominators are required, all of whom should have first-hand knowledge of the nominee’s contributions to Medieval Studies. For more information, please visit the CARA Service Award web page.

CARA Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Medieval Academy’s Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA) invites nominations for its annual teaching prize, which recognizes outstanding pedagogical achievement by Medieval Academy members. This can include:

  • teaching inspiring courses at the undergraduate or graduate levels;
  • creating innovative teaching materials (including textbooks);
  • developing courses and curricula;
  • scholarship of teaching and learning (including presentations at conferences as well as publications)
  • support for K-12 pedagogy and curricula;
  • community-oriented or publicly-directed educational initiatives.

Normally, one prize is given for undergraduate and one prize for graduate teaching, each in the amount of $1000. These will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Medieval Academy.

MAA News – Upcoming Deadlines

The Medieval Academy of America invites applications for the following grants. Please note that applicants must be members in good standing as of September 15 in order to be eligible for Medieval Academy awards.

The Inclusivity and Diversity Research Grant
The Inclusivity and Diversity Research Grant of up to $3,000 will be granted annually to a scholar, at any stage in their career, who seeks to pursue innovative research that will broaden the scope of medieval studies. Projects that focus on non-European regions or topics under the Inclusivity and Diversity Committee’s purview such as race, class, disability, gender, religion, or sexuality are particularly welcomed. The grant prioritizes applicants who are students, ECRs, or non-tenured. For the current round of applications, we encourage proposals that address the challenges of conducting research during the Covid-19 era. (Deadline 31 December 2022)

Belle Da Costa Greene Award
The Belle Da Costa Greene Award of $2,000 will be granted annually to a medievalist of color for research and travel. The award may be used to visit archives, attend conferences, or to facilitate writing and research. The award will be granted on the basis of the quality of the proposed project, the applicant’s budgetary needs (as expressed by a submitted budget and in the project narrative), and the estimation of the ways in which the award will facilitate the applicant’s research and contribute to the field. Olivia Remie Constable Award
Four Olivia Remie Constable Awards of $1,500 each will be granted to emerging junior faculty, adjunct or unaffiliated scholars (broadly understood: post-doctoral, pre-tenure) for research and travel. Click here for more information. (Deadline 15 February 2023)

MAA Dissertation Grants:
The nine annual Medieval Academy Dissertation Grants support advanced graduate students who are writing Ph.D. dissertations on medieval topics. The $2,000 grants help defray research expenses. Click here for more information. (Deadline 15 February 2023)

MAA/GSC Grant for Innovation in Community-Building and Professionalization

The MAA/GSC Grant(s) will be awarded to an individual or graduate student group from one or more universities. The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new and innovative efforts that support pre-professionalization, encourage communication and collaboration across diverse groups of graduate students, and build communities amongst graduate student medievalists. Click here for more information. MAA News – MAA GSC Digital Humanities Showcase

All day on Thursday, 1 December 2022, the MAA’s Graduate Student Committee will be hosting over Zoom its first-ever Digital Humanities Showcase. This event is a space for attendees to learn about the collaborative efforts of medievalists from across the globe who are incorporating technologies into their study and teaching of the medieval period. This virtual gathering will serve as a forum for scholars to learn about and celebrate achievements in the digital humanities, broadly conceived. This mini-conference will feature three sessions of 10-minute presentations that will cover topics from the crowdsourcing of manuscript digitization all the way to the visualizing and mapping of social networks in the premodern world. These sessions will be followed by a longer feature presentation by Roger L. Martínez-Dávila (Professor of History, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs), who will discuss his work on the Immersive Global Middle Ages project. Dynastic Change, Family Networks and Female Genealogies in Medieval Armenia (11th–13th c.)

This lecture will focus on a period of medieval Armenian history – eleventh to late thirteenth centuries – that was characterized by a gradual deterioration and break-down of its until then traditional social structure based on land-holding military families known as nakharars. In this context a number of new military men, mostly with no illustrious lineage and/or previous connection to certain specific regions, rose to power. As they sought ways of legitimizing their control of recently conquered land and resources in various parts of historical Armenia, marriage alliances and, hence, the building of new family networks via women acquired increasing importance. This is especially true in the case of wives that came from older, prestigious dynasties which had lost or were about to lose their significance. There are also cases of women who were themselves from ‘new families’ but who played a key role in entering local networks of power in different ways. These general considerations will be illustrated on specific cases bringing to the audience’s attention the significance of women from (new or old) élite families, particularly from the end of Bagratid rule, and through Seljuk and Mongol (particularly Ilkhanid) periods. The inter-religious aspects of such family networks will be equally highlighted. Although the talk will address various regions of historical Armenia, greater attention will be paid to Syunik‘, reflecting my on-going research-in-progress.

Zara Pogossian is a specialist in medieval Armenian history, culture and religion, especially in relation to other peoples, cultures and religions in the Near East and Asia Minor. She is Associate Professor of Byzantine Civilization at the University of Florence, and the Principal Investigator of the ERC Project ArmEn: Armenia Entangled: Connectivity and Cultural Encounters in Medieval Eurasia 9th–14th Centuries.

2023 CAARI (Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute) Fellowships

The deadlines for the CAARI-sponsored graduate student fellowships is December 9, 2022, and for all others, it is January 9, 2023.

This year’s  grants include:

  1. Three graduate student stipends offering support for travel to Cyprus and lodging at CAARI.
  2. Two CAARI/CAORC postdoctoral fellowships that fund a month’s research in Cyprus.
  3. The postdoctoral fellowship in honor of Professor Eddie Peltenburg, that can support a full academic year’s research time on Cyprus.

13 Funded PhD Positions in Late Medieval/Early Modern Book Studies 

‘Re-mediating the Early Book: Pasts and Futures’ (REBPAF) is a European Commission-funded MSCA Doctoral Network that will support 13 PhD researchers undertaking projects on late medieval and early modern books. These PhD researchers will be spread across the following institutions: University of Galway (3 positions), University of Antwerp (2 positions), University of Alicante (2 positions), University of Zürich (2 positions), University of Vienna (2 positions), and University of Bristol (2 positions). All PhD researchers recruited to this network will join a vibrant and supportive international community of scholars; they will also benefit from bespoke, network-wide programming and will gain hands-on work experience in related cultural sectors as part of their training programme. 

We are now accepting applications from prospective doctoral researchers. Applications are due by 10 January 2023. The PhD positions will begin on 1 September 2023

About REBPAF 

The digital revolution is opening our eyes to the important historical truth that the enduring cultural and economic value of the book has always depended on its adaptability to different media, today from printed book to e-book (and back again), and in the past from manuscript book to printed book (and vice versa).  

REBPAF focuses on the ways in which 15th- and 16th-century book producers (scribes, printers, entrepreneurs) negotiated the dynamic relations between the manuscript book and the printed book and adapted to the evolving challenges of the market, and it demonstrates the continuing relevance of these cultural and economic negotiations to the modern world. To this end, REBPAF unites the interests of present-day organisations that re-mediate the early book – publishers, bookdealers, museums, and other stakeholders in the creative and heritage sectors – with those of academic scholarship. REBPAF has the double aim of: 1) engaging a new generation of medievalists and early modernists in an innovative and collaborative research programme that asks fundamental and interdisciplinary questions about the history of the book and the written word and its future in a digital environment; and 2) equipping the researchers recruited to this network with high-level transferable skills and competencies to be acquired and applied not just in academic settings, but also through internships and training workshops provided by a suite of nine European non-academic partners that have a direct interest in and relevance to our research agenda. 

REBPAF’s non-academic partners include Antiquariat Inlibris (Austria), Maggs Bros. Ltd. (UK), The National Print Museum (Ireland), Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austria), Vlaamse Erfgoedbibliotheken (Belgium), Stiftsbibliothek Klosterneuburg (Austria), Boydell & Brewer (UK), Quaternio Verlag Luzern (Switzerland), and Cúirt International Festival of Literature (Ireland). 

Benefits 

Successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for recruited researchers. The indicative gross salary is 3400 per month (adjusted according to a country correction formula to account for cost-of-living differences between EU Member States) plus a 600 monthly mobility allowance. An additional family allowance is also available, if applicable, and the network will financially facilitate researchers’ participation in off-site training activities where appropriate. The net salary for each researcher will be dependent on local tax regulations and on the country correction factor. Full PhD funding is guaranteed for 36 months with the possibility of additional funding in some instances, depending on local and national arrangements. In institutions where it is customary to charge tuition fees to doctoral students, waivers will be granted for project participants.

Call for Papers – Annual Symposium on Medieval & Renaissance Studies

The Tenth Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies (June 12-14, 2023) is a convenient summer venue in North America for scholars to present papers, organize sessions, participate in roundtables, and engage in interdisciplinary discussion. The goal of the Symposium is to promote serious scholarly investigation into all topics and in all disciplines of medieval and Renaissance studies.

The plenary speakers for this year will be Uta-Renate Blumenthal, of the Catholic University of America, and Lia Markey, of the Newberry Library, Chicago.

The Symposium is held annually on the beautiful midtown St. Louis campus of Saint Louis University. On campus housing options include affordable, air-conditioned apartments as well as a more luxurious hotel. Inexpensive meal plans are also available, although there is a wealth of restaurants, bars, and cultural venues within easy walking distance of campus.

While attending the Symposium, participants are free to use the Vatican Film Library, the Rare Books Division, and the general collection at Saint Louis University’s Pius XII Memorial Library. These collections offer access to tens of thousands of medieval and early modern manuscripts on microfilm as well as strong holdings in medieval and Renaissance history, literature, languages, manuscript studies, theology, philosophy, and canon law. The Jesuit Archives & Research Center is adjacent to the university and also accessible to Symposium attendees.

The Tenth Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies invites proposals for papers, complete sessions, and roundtables. Any topics regarding the scholarly investigation of the medieval and early modern world are welcome. Papers are normally twenty minutes each and sessions are scheduled for ninety minutes. Scholarly organizations are especially encouraged to sponsor proposals for complete sessions, and organizing at least two sessions in coordination with each other is highly recommended.

Submission are currently open and the deadline for all proposals is December 31, 2022. Decisions will be made by the end of January and the final program will be published in March.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce the academic programs and fellowships for the 2023-2024 academic year at the Gennadius Library. Opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from diplomat and bibliophile Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection of over 146,000 books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating the Hellenic tradition and neighboring cultures. The Library is an internationally renowned center for the study of Greek history, literature, and art, from the Byzantine period to modern times.

CONSTANTINE AND GEORGE MACRICOSTAS FELLOWSHIP: For Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D.s (within the last 5 years), of any nationality, for work in the Gennadius Library for the full academic year. Research must focus on the role of the Eastern Orthodox church in the broader history of Hellenism. Stipend of $11,500 plus room and board at Loring Hall, and waiver of School fees.

COTSEN TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP FOR RESEARCH IN GREECE: Short-term travel award of $2,000 for senior scholars and graduate students, for work at the Gennadius Library. Open to all nationalities. At least one month of residency required. School fees are waived for a maximum of two months.

SCHWARZ FELLOWSHIP AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY FOR RESEARCH ON MUSIC: Career musicians, or researchers who are currently Ph.D. candidates or have received their Ph.D. within the last 5 years, of any nationality, engaged in research on music that focuses on cultural interactions in the Mediterranean world broadly defined. Stipend of $11,500 plus room and board at Loring Hall for the academic year, and waiver of School fees.
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2023.

SCHWARZ FELLOWSHIP AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY FOR RESEARCH ON URBAN ARCHITECTURE: Practicing architects, or researchers who are currently Ph.D. candidates or recent Ph.D. holders (within the last five years), of any nationality, engaged in research on architecture, urban planning, and the history of the built environment in Greece from 1821 to the present. Stipend of $11,500 plus room and board at Loring Hall for the academic year, and waiver of School fees.

MEDIEVAL GREEK SUMMER SESSION AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY,
SUMMER 2023: Graduate students and university professors in any field of late antique, post-antique, Byzantine or medieval studies at any university worldwide. Month-long program in intermediate level Medieval Greek language and philology at the Gennadius Library, with site and museum trips. Up to twelve scholarships available.
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2023.
