Call for Papers: New Perspectives on the Historian and His World

Orderic Vitalis:

New Perspectives on the Historian and His World

(9-11 April 2013, St John’s College, University of Durham)

The organising committee of the Durham University Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies conference ‘Orderic Vitalis: New Perspectives on the historian and his world’ invite abstracts from prospective speakers. This event, funded by the Durham University IMRS, will provide a forum for the dissemination of new research into the life and works of the monastic scholar, Orderic Vitalis. With plans already in place to publish a ‘companion’ volume on Orderic, this conference will aim to re-invigorate existing work and open new lines of research around a figure whose legacy has proven vital to scholars of the Anglo-Norman world.

While the conference welcomes papers on a wide scope of topics, we particularly invite abstracts for papers relating to the following areas:

  • The manuscript history of Orderic’s Historia ecclesiastica.
  • Orderic’s scholarly and scribal career away from the Historia ecclesiastica.
  • Orderic’s travels, administrative activities, and studies away from Saint-Évroul.
  • Orderic’s world view and his networks of knowledge-exchange and transfer.
    • The ‘rediscovery’ of the Historia ecclesiastica by early modern audiences, and Orderic’s subsequent influence on the development of Anglo-Norman studies.

Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts of between 250-300 words, and should also include their contact details (name, affiliation, e-mail address). The deadline for submissions is 1 September 2012. Limited bursaries towards travel costs will be offered to postgraduate speakers. If you wish to apply for one of these, please indicate this when submitting an abstract.

Call for Papers: Representations of Authority to 1707: Scotland and her Nearest Neighbours

What use is it to be given authority over man and land if others do not know about it?  Furthermore, what use is that authority if those who know about it do not respect it? These questions have been crucial since regulations for governance entered society.  In the years prior to 1707 Scotland and her nearest neighbours developed unique relationships between their people and the manifests of authority; whether it be crown or noble, government or church, burgh or merchant; these individuals and groups all desired power and influence, however, their means of representing their authority were often very different. The relations between these countries were also dominated by attempts to represent authority to each other both in war and peace; to what extent can similarities be drawn between these kingdoms and principalities, or can national distinctions always be found?

Keynote Speaker: Dr Katie Stevenson, University of St Andrews

We welcome 200 word proposals for 20 minute papers or panel proposals, from any discipline and any research level, considering any of the following themes in relation to the above topic:

  • Queenship and/or study of women; or Regency representations
  • Royal ceremonial; or court and household; or Noble display
  • Early representative art; or Architecture; or Art
  • Literature; or Language
  • Monasteries; or Non-monastic ecclesiastics
  • Parliament and politics; or Law and justice
  • Burgh, merchants and trade; or international relations

Please send proposals for panels and papers by Tuesday 15th May to representations.of.authority@gmail.com

This is a postgraduate organised event and there are plans for publishing the proceedings.

CULTURES IN TRANSLATION

Ninth Biennial International Conference 12-16 February 2013

Monash University, Caulfield Campus, Melbourne, Australia

CALL FOR PAPERS – NOW OPEN

The conference seeks to explore the many varieties of translation at work in medieval and early modern studies. We invite papers which deal with diversity and change in areas such as language, culture, religion, space. We are interested in exploring both how medieval and early modern cultures understood translation, and how modern scholars make disciplinary, linguistic and social translations in their work. We encourage papers on these themes (and others pertaining to medieval and early modern studies), and papers from postgraduate students and early career researchers are especially welcome.

A very important resource for Tironian Notes

Dear Colleagues:

Michael I. Allen would like to draw your attention to Martin Hellmann’s outstanding web-based resource for the verification and deciphering of Early Medieval Shorthand, a.k.a. Tironian Notes.  His “supertextus notarum tironianarum” is a magnificent achievement, and one constantly being enriched to our enormous benefit.  Please find it, as below, via: http://www.martinellus.de
