The Dorothy Dunnett History Prize 2013

The Dorothy Dunnett History Prize 2013, worth £1,000, will be awarded by the Dorothy Dunnett Society for an essay of no more than 4,000 words, in English, based on the entrant’s original research.

Entries for the Prize will be accepted from history students registered on a PhD programme at any recognised higher education institution.

Essays may address any aspect of current historical research that meets the Society’s aims and/or falls within the thematic guidelines or other relevant topics and is contained, broadly, within the time periods of the novels.

We are seeking submissions that will reflect Dorothy Dunnett’s skill in bringing alive the events and people of her chosen periods.

Submissions will be considered by a panel of Trustees of the Dorothy Dunnett Society and academics drawn from the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, at the University of Edinburgh.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) invites applications for the position of Director of the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory of Archaeological Science (WL). The primary responsibility of the director of WL is, in consultation with ASCSA officials and the WL advisory committee, to develop and implement research goals for the laboratory and to oversee its day-to-day operation. This is a fulltime position and requires significant experience in the archaeological sciences, especially as they relate to Mediterranean archaeology, and administrative skills. The position reports to the Director of ASCSA and is a member of the senior academic and administrative staff in Athens.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with rank and experience. Term beginning July 14, 2014 to be negotiated (normally three-year renewable).

At time of application candidates are required to have 1) a Ph.D. in archaeological science or a related field; 2) research and laboratory experience in the archaeological sciences, especially in bioarchaeology, geoarchaeology, or environmental sciences; 3) an established publication record in archaeological science; and 4) a strong record of external funding.

Preferred qualifications include experience in 1) Mediterranean archaeology; 2) management, including in a laboratory; 3) collaborative research with archaeologists; 4) university teaching in the archaeological sciences; and 5) collections management.

The successful applicant will have as primary responsibilities the management and administration of the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory of Archaeological Science. The duties require that the WL director 1) develop and implement strategic, prioritized research goals for the laboratory; 2) work with ASCSA oversight committees on setting laboratory goals and priorities; 3) manage laboratory personnel, physical plant, equipment, and collections; 4) support fellows and visiting researchers; 5) conduct laboratory policy including outreach to affiliated archaeological projects; 6) contribute to the academic programs of the ASCSA; 7) develop new and strengthen established networks with other laboratories and institutions in line with the research priorities of the laboratory; 8) lead in fund raising for research programs of the WL; 9) maintain a personal program of research and publication.

American Research center in Sofia Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

AMERICAN RESEARCH CENTER IN SOFIA 2014-15 PRE-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION

ELIGIBILITY
Graduate students of any citizenship enrolled at North American academic institutions, or academic institutions accredited in North America, engaged in research in the humanities and/or social sciences with a focus on Bulgaria or the Balkan Peninsula (antiquity through modern day).

THE PROGRAM
The fellowships are of 9-month (September to May) or 3-month (September to November, February to April) duration. In addition to independent research, fellows will participate in the academic program of ARCS, which includes a lecture series, seminars, and excursions designed to provide a broad thematic vision of Bulgarian and Balkan history and culture from prehistory to the present.

THE FELLOWSHIPS
Fellows receive a $600 monthly stipend, housing in Sofia, language instruction, travel expenses within the academic program, and up to

$1,000 for travel expenses between North America and Bulgaria. The fellowship may be combined with additional funding; however, ARCS must be notified, and the terms of the ARCS Fellowship will be subject to negotiation. We strongly encourage you to inquire in about possibilities for funding from your home institution and to indicate this in your application.

Graduate Programme Grant

The Dutch Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek (Research School in Medieval Studies) is proud to announce that it has received from the Dutch Research Organisation (NWO) a so-called ‘Graduate Programme’-grant worth €800,000 for a project submitted by the OzSM in February, entitled ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’.

The NWO programme is intended to stimulate the forming of excellent teaching and research environments for talented young researchers. With this financial kick-start, four doctoral students can be appointed to carry out research in an area relevant to the approved project, based on a research proposal submitted by a student from any of the participating universities in the Onderzoekschool. The school will select the successful candidates.

Summer Latin Program

In 2014, the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto will offer the following courses in Medieval Latin:

Beginning Latin (8 hours of instruction weekly, 20 May to 11 July 2014, with an optional three-week reading course thereafter).  Textbook: Moreland and Fleischer, Latin: an Intensive Course.

Level One Medieval Latin (7.5 hours weekly, 26 May to 4 July 2014, with an optional two-week grammar review before the course).

Level Two Medieval Latin (7.5 hours weekly, 7 July to 15 August 2014).

Enrolment in the Level One and Level Two courses will be restricted and will depend on performance in the April Level One Latin examination.  Information on the examinations and the summer program is available on line (medieval.utoronto.ca).

The fee for each course is $1,000 (Can) for Canadian residents, or its equivalent in US dollars for non-Canadian residents.  The deadline to apply for all courses is 1 May 2014.  Enrolment in each course is limited.

Two students at the Level One and Level Two will be awarded full tuition scholarships funded by the Medieval Academy through the Committee on Centers and Regional Associations (CARA).  To apply for the CARA scholarships, send a transcript and a brief personal statement indicating your interests and the value of the summer program for your studies and arrange for a letter of reference to be mailed separately to Medieval Latin Program, Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, 125 Queen’s Park, 3rd Floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2C7.  The deadline for the CARA scholarship applications is 15 March 2014.

ASSESSMENT IN MEDIEVAL LATIN

The Centre for Medieval Studies in Toronto continues to offer its Level One and Level Two Medieval Latin examinations to external students.  Examinations will be as follows: Level One, 14 April 2014 and 3 September 2014; Level Two, 16 April 2014 and 5 September 2014.  Fee for examinations: $50 (US) for non-Canadians, $50 (Can.) for Canadians.  For details and application forms, please visit the Centre’s website: medieval.utoronto.ca.  Note that admission into the Summer Medieval Latin Level One and Level Two courses will be decided on the basis of the April Level One Latin examination.
